Tucked away amongst the picturesque rice fields and rural villages of Canggu in south west Bali, the five-bedroom, fully staffed East Residence and Spa is a palatial yet welcoming property, offering western comforts and contemporary Indonesian style, infused with traditional Balinese touches. Centre-stage within two acres of exquisitely landscaped grounds is a 20m infinity-edge pool, which seemingly drops away to a riverbank of rainforest foliage and waterfall.

With its lovely outdoor relaxation areas, Zen-infused gardens and own private spa, this residence offers guests a rejuvenating sanctuary, yet is a only short drive away from some of the island’s finest surfing beaches and most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak. Passion, care and meticulous attention to detail have all been poured into the five-bedroom East Residence and Spa.

Within the solid western architectural design, interiors are of the highest quality and abundant use is made of natural materials such as mahogany and granite. But with an eye for traditional culture, East Residence and Spa is tastefully adorned with exquisite Indonesian artworks, decor and antique pieces: framed antique Sulawesi warrior jackets line the corridors and carved Balinese chaise langue are thoughtfully provided on porches.

Frangipani flower greetings on arrival and a traditional floral and bamboo welcome piece placed on each bed are some of the Balinese rituals respectfully observed. But the owner’s love of global travel is also evident, with a vintage Italian Vespa Scooter provided for countryside forays, Buddhist statues dotting the gardens and antique carved African chairs.

The two acre property offers a great sense of spaciousness and sanctuary. Reflecting the tropical lifestyle, la piece de la resistance is a variety of outdoor areas to peacefully reflect and relax.

All five en-suite bedrooms feature generous-sized balconies to savor Canggu’s rice fields and villa gardens, while the detached Rainforest Cottage boasts a jungle-style, outdoor bathroom. The strikingly designed infinity-edge pool offers another glorious spot for leisurely distractions. Beyond the pool, the beautifully landscaped gardens, dissected by a small river, slope down to a second river and waterfall. Step by step, through manicured lawns, trees and exotic blooms, the terraced gardens reveal a Balinese open-air lounge pavilion, three thatched bales (traditional gazebos) and a private spa – for the exclusive use of guests – tucked away beside a rain forested riverbank.

Built in 2008 and now available for rental, this cherished family home extends a heartfelt Balinese welcome through a team of local staff. Ever-friendly but discreetly present, they are the icing on the cake of this truly magnificent property.

LOCATION

Canggu District
Surrounded by agricultural scenery, East Residence and Spa rests in Tumbak Bayuh, one of several villages in the district of Canggu – a sleepy but increasingly awakening, coastal locale. The immediate vicinity comprises mainly local community schools, temples, small restaurants and shops, yet Bali’s premier sports and social club, the Canggu Club, is just five kilometers away, with international-standard dining and leisure amenities. A string of wildly beautiful beaches renowned for their surf are within a ten to 15-minute drive of the villa, including the legendary Echo Beach. Drive eight kilometers south of Tumbak Bayuh and you’ll reach Seminyak, Bali’s most fashionable and cosmopolitan destination, crammed with chic boutiques and hip and happening bars and restaurants.

Distances to:
Canggu = 5km
Denpasar Airport = 27km
Denpasar Town = 11km
Echo Beach = 4km
Kerobokan = 4km
Kuta = 15km
Nirwana Bali Golf Club / Tanah Lot = 15km
Seminyak = 8km

Rooms
East Residence and Spa comprises a main, two-storey building and a one-bedroom Rainforest Cottage resting among the gardens. Completed 2008, the property is in immaculate condition; its facilities and appliances gleaming new. With whitewashed walls, natural breezes and plenty of sunlight streaming in, a light and airy ambience prevails.

The heart of this home from home is the open-plan living-dining room which leads off to two adjoining kitchens, a TV room, office and two guest washrooms. From here, a solid wood staircase rises to the first floor and four of the villa’s five en-suite bedrooms. The living-dining room extends out to the infinity-edge pool and deck area, where stone steps cut through three terraces of exquisite gardens, leading down to the Balinese open-air lounge pavilion (Open Living), the spa and four thatched bales.

The villa compound is reached by a driveway with garage (maximum parking four cars) and staff quarters on the right-hand side. On arrival, guests are led through a side-entrance of wood doors, stone statues and an alang-alang (Balinese thatch) roof, to a delightful koi-filled water feature and porch reception area.

Bedrooms
The four bedrooms in the main building, including the master bedroom, are equally spaced off the first floor landing, affording some privacy. A fifth bedroom rests separately in Rainforest Cottage. All five bedrooms feature air conditioning (no ceiling fans), king-sized beds and fine white cotton bedding. Bathrooms are contemporary and stylish, with glass cubicle showers, while furniture is high quality, modern Indonesian. Delightful traditional touches include high bamboo- and grass-roofed ceilings. Bathroom amenities stored in Balinese offerings boxes and Indonesian art works adorning the walls. In total, the villa sleeps ten adult guests, but provides a baby cot (foldable) and extra rollaway bed.

First-floor master bedroom
The largest of the first floor bedrooms, the master bedroom boasts a generous-sized bathroom with sunken bathtub and his and hers sinks. Additionally, the expansive floor space allows room for couches and an ottoman. A 52-inch plasma TV is provided for DVD viewing.

First-floor guest bedrooms
The three bedrooms on the first floor are relatively similar in size and decor and all have spacious balconies with outdoor furniture. On clear days you can see Mount Agung, an active volcano and Bali’s highest peak, from bedrooms one and two. Arguably, bedroom three (the room furthest from the stairs) offers the best rice-field, sunset and sunrise views, which can be enjoyed from an antique Indonesian chaise langue.

Rainforest Cottage
This lovely one-bedroom lodge, resting below the pool and beside the diminutive River Subak, makes for a wonderfully romantic bolt-hole. Surrounded by natural foliage, the entrance porch features an antique African chaise langue, while a second porch, facing the rainforest, supplies table and chairs. A 39-inch plasma TV is available for DVD viewing (with DVDs provided).

Open to the elements, the tropical-style bathroom features a stand-alone bathtub, glass cubicle shower, sink and toilet and takes in rainforest views and waterfall sounds. Modesty prevails with a curtain of banana plants and concertina-style, opaque panelling.

Living, Dining and Kitchens
Through the villa’s main entrance, comprising traditional-style, hand crafted wood doors. The living-dining room is an expansive, oblong-shaped area offering contemporary style yet informality and comfort. Encircled by glass doors and sheer white curtains, this open-plan room lets in plenty of natural light, while the central sofa section is the perfect vantage point for the infinity-edge pool just outside. Ceiling fans and breezes through open doors allow a pleasant airiness. Like elsewhere, furniture and furnishings is contemporary Indonesian, with high-quality finishing, while traditional local touches include charming hand-carved Balinese statuettes.

On the right-hand side there is a large antique wooden dining table (protected by a glass top) seating for ten. The generous-sized open-plan guest (dry) kitchen, just behind, is bordered by a raised counter of solid Borneo wood and within, features granite counter tops. Well-equipped and well-stocked, the kitchen boasts an Italian oven, five-ring cooker (electricity and gas) and large refrigerator. Behind a partition is the staff (wet) kitchen and walk-in pantry, plus a discreetly positioned guest washroom.

To the right of the gardens, almost submerged in a rainforest setting and near a scenic waterfall, rests ‘Open Living’ – the Balinese open-air lounge pavilion. Traditional touches include a rustic-style high ceiling, with bamboo blinds offering protection from the elements. This makes a gloriously peaceful spot for afternoon teas and sundowners as daylight fades through the trees. Seating includes sofas and a dining table accommodating eight. Adjoining here is a small kitchen plus an attached guest washroom; open-air, it comes discreetly framed by bamboo blinds.

‘Open Living’ is ideal for informal gatherings, lunches and receptions; a simple barbecue is on-hand and a sound system runs to here and next-door neighbor, the spa.

TV Room and Office
On the opposite side of the living-dining room, a TV Room features comfy sofas and a 58-inch, high density plasma TV, transmitting 89 international and 10 local TV channels plus 17 radio stations. If that’s not of interest, a stack of DVDs are provided.

The Office features iPod dock and iPod (another set is stored in the kitchen), desktop computer with Broadband ADSL, fax, printer and CD player/stereo system. There’s a small selection of novels, a CCTV security monitor available for guest use, and an adjoining guest washroom. You can access Wi-Fi Internet in the living-dining room and beside the pool.

Pool, Garden and Bales
Leading out from the living-dining room, is a stunning infinity-edge pool (20 x 6m, 1.2m depth). Maintained daily, the pool has a separate, shallow kid’s area, and sunken bar section with submerged bar stools, and ornamental islands. Materials used include black volcanic stone and Italian ceramic tiles. The expansive deck provides four comfy sun beds plus tables and chairs, perfect for outdoor snacking.

Once jungle and now defined by terraced landscaping, the exquisite gardens fall naturally into three distinct levels, dissected by the River Subak and bordered by a second (unnamed) river. Accessed by large-sized stone steps, the gardens feature sloping manicured lawns and tropical blooms and plants, water features and Buddhist stone statues.

At the bottom, edged by a burst of rainforest, three bales rest peacefully on a ledge beside the shaded riverbank, making an idyllic setting for yoga, massage and meditation (another bale is located to the right of the pool).

The river is fenced off and marks the property border. Should you wish to explore the riverbank and steep rainforest embankment opposite, ask the gardener to open the gate. The gardens, pool-deck and stone steps are all prettily lit-up at nighttime.

SPA
Set below the main building, next door to ‘Open Living’ and beside a rain forested riverbank and waterfall, the villa’s private spa comprises a detached pavilion with alang alang roofing. Within, a modern-style treatment room is furnished with two massage beds, while outside is a charming open-air bathroom with traditional stone bath, edged by tropical foliage, bamboo blinds and concertina-style, opaque panelling. A river deck, or porch, directly faces the rainforest and features two vintage leather recliner chairs. Treatments – and yoga – can also be enjoyed in four thatched bales, located within the grounds.

Staff
The villa has 10 full-time local staff with their own on-site staff quarters located just outside the main compound.

East Residence and Spa also boasts a vintage 1960s Vespa scooter for local runs and touring (additional cost).

Set amongst Canggu’s picturesque rice fields, this spectacular four-bedroom property is evocative of a traditional rural community from many moons ago, so it’s quite a surprise to discover that Villa Salimett was only completed in January, 2010.

An architectural masterpiece, the villa comprises four antique Joglo-style dwellings transported from Java and a magnificent open-sided living pavilion. Rectangular shaped, constructed almost entirely of fine old teak wood and topped with a distinctive cone-shaped serap (ironwood) roof, the Joglos have been subtly modified to form four detached bedrooms; luxuriously appointed and extended with porches and modern-style tropical bathrooms. Much more than mere places to rest, these authentic dwellings set serenely within the villa’s expansive gardens are infused with Indonesian heritage and individual character and charm.

The living pavilion also boasts beautifully aged timbers – especially teak – and a high serap roof; its traditional touches complemented with antique ornaments and furniture and intricately carved ceilings. Housing the villa’s living / dining area, kitchen and TV lounge, this expansive open-sided, open-plan building is, however, stylishly contemporary, presenting a contrasting modern-Indonesian look. Although a marvelous example of architectural heritage, Villa Salimett doesn’t forgo present-day comforts, which include a 20m infinity-edge pool, iPod docks and plasma satellite TVs.

Berawa Beach is just a five-minute stroll from this peaceful sanctuary of exceptional taste, and several world-class surfing beaches along this lovely south-west coastline – including surfers haunt, Echo Beach – are easily accessible by car. Bali’s premier sports and leisure venue, Canggu Club, is two kilometers away, and fashionable Seminyak is approximately twenty minutes’ drive south.

Accommodation
With its grand black wooden doors adorned with intricate carvings and capped with traditional serap roof, the entrance to Villa Salimett sets the scene for what awaits beyond. Just inside, the Zen-infused water feature leads through to a superb single-storey pavilion. This open-sided expansive building forms the heart of the four-bedroom property; although built in traditional Indonesian style, it presents a predominately contemporary look. The villa’s living / dining area, kitchen and small TV lounge are contained within, as well as an adjoining storage area, laundry / utility room and guest washroom.

From here, gardens and simple paving stones lead down to a center-stage infinity-edge pool with an adjoining and highly unusual pool bar constructed from antique woods. The pool area is edged by expansive and simple stone paving. Tucked away at the far end of the gardens, rests a solitary bale (traditional Balinese gazebo). The gardens also reveal the property’s piece de resistance: four antique-wood bedrooms, originally traditional Javanese Joglo houses, beautifully placed in a rough square formation.

Bedrooms
Villa Salimett sleeps eight guests in four detached bedrooms accessed by paving stones dissecting the gardens and spaced far enough apart for ample privacy. Created from authentic antique Joglos, it’s not surprising that each of the four unique rooms evokes the lived-in feel of an age-old Indonesian dwelling. The bedrooms are individual in character, size and layout, although all feature the same traditional cone-shape serap roofs and walls of aged teak wood, and are furnished with king-size beds. Although emphasis is on the traditional, modern-day luxe concessions include air conditioning (tastefully camouflaged by wood grills), ceiling fan, 29-inch plasma-screen satellite TV, safety deposit box, iPod dock and mini refrigerator. Striking contemporary lighting features throughout, while sensitive modifications to the construction include glass wall panels to add daylight, private terraces of either stone or reclaimed timber and luxury en-suite bathrooms. The latter all feature antique wood interiors and furnishings, stand-alone bathtubs, slinky Grohe fixtures, his n’ hers sinks in marble or stone and refreshing tropical rain showers.

Master Bedroom
Located on the garden’s right side beside the main pavilion, the largest of the four Joglo bedrooms is also Villa Salimett’s finest example of this distinctive Javanese architectural style. Spacious and with a high vaulted ceiling, right above the bed is a striking centre-piece of intricately carved wood. Throughout this sumptuous master bedroom an underlying vampish theme features black wood furniture pieces buffed to perfection and a fuchsia silk couch scattered with orange silk cushions, while organza silk curtains are draped around the bed. A buffalo skull placed atop a table makes an unusual decorative piece! Large photographs of bygone Indonesia grace the teak walls and, in keeping with the overall rustic ambience, the plasma TV comes hidden away in an antique chest placed at the bed’s base. In the lovely semi-open bathroom the focal point is the generous-sized stone bathtub set out in the open on pebbles and attractively framed by tropical foliage.

Wooden doors lead out from the bedroom to a large stone-floored porch with low wooden roof where an ultra-contemporary hanging pod chair and somewhat contrasting antique wood chairs and table are provided, ideal for looking out over the shimmering pool.

Bedrooms Two, Three and Four
Roughly similar to each other in size, the remaining three bedrooms offer a more compact, intimate feel than the master and feature low wooden ceilings and (with the exception of bedroom four) timbered floors.

Opposite the master bedroom, bedroom two is the smallest of the four. It features a separate wardrobe / dressing area and, similar to the master bedroom, the plasma TV comes disguised in an antique bed chest. The expansive, semi-open bathroom here features a striking terrazzo stone bathtub surrounded by leafy foliage, plus lovely decorative touches of sea shell ornaments and traditional woven baskets.

Bedroom three, on the garden’s left side, features a rustic-style, wood frame four-poster bed. Unlike the other bedrooms, the bathroom here is indoors: contrasting with the traditional theme, an indulgent ’boudoir’ look is fuelled by a centre-stage galvanized aluminum bathtub and crystal glass chandeliers.

Tucked away at the gardens’ end, beyond the master bedroom, bedroom four also features a simple wood frame four-poster bed and a separate dressing / wardrobe section. Intricate carvings decorate a section of the teak walls, but here the floor is made of stone. Bedroom four perhaps offers the most impressive bathroom: in tropical open-air style, it houses an eye-catching stone bathtub capped with circular stone decoration, accessed by stepping stones across a small ornamental pool. Modesty prevails with a curtain of leafy foliage and gardens.

These three bedrooms provide charming, low-roofed wooden porches revealing views across the gardens or, in bedroom four’s case, over the bale and outlying rice fields. Outdoor furniture ranging from elegantly carved antique tables and chairs to family-size day beds littered with plump cushions contribute to these wonderfully peaceful spots for reading and relaxing.

Living, Dining, Kitchen and TV area
The stunning main pavilion is mainly open-plan, built in traditional design but with a contemporary Indonesian style. Light and airy, the pavilion is open-sided, cooled by breezes and ceiling fan, and protected from the elements by simple coconut blinds. The building has been constructed using quality natural materials from across Indonesia including terrazzo and andesit stone and antique and reclaimed woods.

The centrally positioned living room has a seating area framed by four wooden pillars softened with white cotton drapes and comprising a massive, teak-based sofa furnished with comfy white cushions, two armchairs in similar style, plus low teak table. Hanging below the high and intricately carved ceiling a mass of bamboo spherical ceiling lights glow like full moons. Numerous antique ornaments are tastefully displayed on old wooden tables and chests; with the exception of an iPod dock, there is scant evidence here of modern-day paraphernalia.

Left of the living room, the dining area is dominated by a massive dining table crafted from a single block of teak. Flanked by traditional low wood seating and benches, this long table can generously accommodate around twelve diners for some truly memorable meals; the antique gong placed behind provides the perfect means to announce dinner. Amongst the surrounding banana plants, a Buddhist statue keeps an eye on proceedings.

To the extreme right of the pavilion is a subtly disguised TV lounge, comprising a low-ceilinged, raised wooden platform area. Snug yet stylish, a large squashy couch drowning in a mass of cushions directly faces the 29-inch plasma-screen satellite TV, displayed on a wooden chest. Also provided are a DVD / CD player, sound system and DVDs.

To the left of the pavilion, antique wood doors flanked by a primitive wood statue of Borneo origin lead through to a contemporary kitchen. Contrasting somewhat with the rest of the property, this utterly stylish and compact kitchen features black terrazzo stone counters, dark stone floors and walls and central teak workstation. Modern utensils include Grohe fixtures and cooker with five gas rings and electric oven. Adjoining here is a small storage zone with separate fridge and freezer and utility / laundry room; beyond, a small guest wash room and leafy patio join up with the dining area.

Edging the pavilion, a Zen-style water feature with two square pools is dissected by a stone path and edged with tropical plants. The constantly gurgling fountains here contribute to an overall calming ambiance in the pavilion.

Pool, Pool bar, Garden and Bale
Sprawling out from the pavilion, the gardens comprise lawns edged by typically tropical foliage, such as birds of paradise blooms and banana plants. Access to the bedrooms, pool area and bale is by way of simple paving stones. The centre-stage infinity-edge pool (20 x 6.5m) is one of the villa’s few overall visible concessions to modern-day living; crafted from natural stone it is attentively guarded by four Buddhist statuettes dotted along the water’s edge. The stone-paved pool terrace provides three double-sized poly rattan sun loungers and thick cotton sunshades – perfect for long lazy days. A surprise addition is a simple, antique ulen wood shower, hidden amongst the tropical foliage between bedrooms two and three.

To the right of the pool is a bar with a difference. Upholding the traditional architectural theme, even Villa Salimett’s pool bar comes with a serap roof, antique woods and ulen wood floor. A comfortable L-shaped sofa and four bar stools furnish the area and the bar is prettily illuminated at night by a mass of large lanterns.

At the bottom of the garden is a serap-roofed bale with. This gazebo-style structure is ideal for quiet contemplation, yoga or massage treatments which the villa staff can organize on request. Beyond the gardens are rice fields and other luxury villas, while towering Mount Batu Karu (2,276m) Bali’s second tallest volcano, is visible on clear days.

Villa Aliya was named after the lovely daughter of the villa’s owners. Designed as a holiday home for the family themselves, this 4-bedroom villa has an amazingly central location in Seminyak, tucked away in a discreet luxurious complex less than 300 metres from the beach. While Seminyak is known for its international restaurants, chic boutiques and glittering nightlife, Villa Aliya’s location on a dead-end road with no traffic, surrounded by expansive tropical landscaped gardens makes it an oasis of calm in the middle of Seminyak’s bustle. Staying at Villa Aliya means you never have to get into a car if you don’t want to – the beach, some of the best known restaurants in Bali, great shops and bars are all within walking distance. Given that the villa itself was created as a holiday home for the family, with all creature comforts and much tasteful attention to detail, you might never even want to venture far beyond it.

About Villa Aliya

Generously laid out on over 600 sqm and two levels, Villa Aliya has a light, contemporary style rounded off by carefully selected Indonesian antiques and ethnic accent pieces providing local timbre.

The Villa has generous open living spaces flowing into each other that were designed to catch a breeze and allow you to enjoy the best of tropical living. The property features 4 air-conditioned bedrooms with modern en-suite bathrooms, a contemporary fitted kitchen with all appliances, two separate open dining areas, a large comfortable living room, a generous open lounge or bar area and a small office space.

A state of the art Bose sound system can be controlled remotely from the living room, the pool and the dining area. Wireless Internet is provided throughout the premises. A large beautifully landscaped garden doubles the property’s size and is ideal for private events or celebrations with children.

Jim Thompson, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Bahama fabrics were used to create a fresh blue and white colour scheme through out the ground floor, and a tasteful tropical green scheme on the second floor. They were combined with carefully selected Indonesian antiques, iconic designs such as McGuire Rattan sets and modern functional furniture pieces to create tasteful and comfortable living spaces.

Special attention was paid to making sure Villa Aliya is ‘kids friendly’ while at the same time allowing parents a maximum of privacy. The comfortable entertainment room that easily converts into a fourth bedroom provides children with their own space to be in while parents can relax in the bar area next door.

The pool area was designed to have no ‘dead corners’ and non-slipping finishes such as roughened granite floors and wooden patios around the pool provide additional safety.

Resin lamps used throughout much of the house not only provide a lovely warm light, but are safer than traditional glass lamps when it comes to being blown over by the wind or by children.

An environmentally friendly solar system provides hot water throughout the property, gray water from the house is recycled for use in the garden, and the pool is based on an ionized system that is not only good to the environment with its reduced need for chlorine but is great for your skin too.

Villa Aliya even has its own personally designed spa products, with a fresh and nurturing fragrance combining lemongrass, ginger and cucumber for Villa Aliya handwash and bodywash. Additional products from Republic of Soap’s green tea and lavender/oatmeal line make sure you feel pampered in every way during your stay.

Living room

A striking eye-catcher in the living room is the living back wall filled with ferns, stag horns and orchids.

This is a clever re-interpretation of an old Dutch room design where air slits close to the ceiling facilitate air flow through the room. The living wall provides a colourful green backdrop for comfortable oversized white Sunbrella sofas decorated with Ralph Lauren cushions in blue and white, and a beautiful McGuire rattan set. Old Balinese wooden house columns were converted into decorative standing lamps. The living room opens up to the pool and has a view of the dining pavilion on the other side.

Office

A separate room at the back was set up as a small office with a computer and printer and a high speed internet connection to make sure that you can stay in touch with the world if you want to. However wireless Internet is available throughout the premises should you wish to keep in touch on your laptop.

Kitchen

The large friendly kitchen continues the blue and white colour scheme created for the downstairs living areas in a modern interpretation of old Dutch colonial style, with replicas of old tiles adding the finishing touch.

Every cook will enjoy the well thought out layout and the state of the art appliances, including a generously sized fridge and a wine cooler.

Bedrooms

Villa Aliya has 4 air-conditioned bedrooms. The villa was designed so that two couples can comfortably share it at the same time; the two master bedrooms are both on the ground level and are of a similar general setup with generous en-suite bathrooms.

Each bedroom features Bose ipod speakers, a 32-inch flat screen TV, ceiling fans and generous wooden wardrobes or walking wardrobes with safety deposit boxes and plenty of storage space.

The first master bedroom has a view of the pool, a large water feature and the garden beyond. The centre of the room is a romantic antique four-poster king-sized bed wrapped in voile. The bedroom also includes a small desk area and a daybed.

The second master bedroom features an antique Javanese bed made of carved old teak wood that was turned into a tasteful headpiece for the king-sized bed. A reading area with a pair of old Javanese wicker chairs complete the room. The room is located on the other side of the living area and the pool from the first master bedroom to maximize privacy.

The third bedroom is located upstairs and has two striking queen sized single beds made of old carved Madura benches. French doors lining the entire length of the room open onto a private balcony with a view of the pool, the landscaped gardens beyond and the outside dining area.

Entertainment Room / Fourth Bedroom

The fourth bedroom is a large lounge space that serves as an entertainment room during the day, with lots of colourful Jim Thompson cushions and mattresses for casual lounging and afternoon naps. The latest 50-inch flat screen TV and a Bose sound system provide high quality entertainment. A card table is also available for more hands-on fun.

Trundle beds built into the lounge area allow the room to be converted into a bedroom within moments; thereby making it especially suited for children. This room was conceived to provide children with their own safe, fun space – giving their parents a chance to relax on their holiday as well.

Bathrooms

All bathrooms were designed in a tasteful ‘beachy’ theme contrasting cream coloured granite with antique woods.

Bathrooms all feature two sinks, and the en-suite bathrooms to the 3 main bedrooms have large eggshell bathtubs in addition to open air showers. Antique Jepara wooden carvings from Java were used to create striking mirror frames.

The bathroom furniture was made from old recycled teak, thereby not only using beautifully aged hardwood but continuing the environmentally friendly theme of Villa Aliya.

Upstairs Lounge / Bar Area

Open on three sides to wonderful views of landscaped gardens and traditional Balinese thatched roofs, the upstairs Bar area almost always catches a breeze from the ocean.

Colourful prints of old drink advertisements decorate the back of the bar area, while comfortable sea grass bar stools invite hanging out at the bar.

Large day beds covered in bright Sunbrella and Tommy Bahama materials provide additional comfortable spaces to lounge. Beautifully hand crafted rattan fans hand enhance the feeling of tropical living.

A specially designed resin chandelier above the bar creates warm, intimate lighting, while a Bose sound system provides high quality musical entertainment. This room is guaranteed to become one of your favourite spaces in Villa Aliya.

Dining Areas

Villa Aliya has two dining areas. The first is a breakfast area made of large wooden benches and a solid table set between the kitchen and the living room. Colourful cushions and specially commissioned modern art completes this space’s fun and casual look.

The second dining space is located in a separate Balinese pavilion or Bale across the pool with 10 comfortable rattan chairs and a large wooden table. Old Balinese house columns were turned into tasteful standing lamps, and a Bose system provides discreet musical ambience. This area has a view of the pool, the main house and the garden.

Garden and Pool

The combination of modern Balinese architecture, abundant space, a lush tropical garden and a quiet village location close to the Canggu beach, make Villa Bendega Villas a stunning retreat for family and friends to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Bali.

The Villas
The villa’s design combines traditional Balinese architecture with clean modern lines, numerous indoor and outdoor spaces that allow groups to gather but also allow the privacy to get away from everyone and everything. Set in almost an acre of wonderful tropical gardens overlooking the rice fields, the villa is a short walk from the beach and a short drive to the chic restaurants and bars of Seminyak.

Designed in partnership with internationally renowned architect Glenn Parker, Villa Bendega Villas respects the style, proportion and symmetry of traditional Balinese architecture within a modern tropical design. Built as a series of five pavilions totaling almost 1,000 m2 and constructed with uncompromising attention to detail, the villa is finished with the highest quality materials including Indonesian hardwood floors, Balinese ceramics, Indian sandstone and Italian travertine, chosen for their natural beauty and durability.

Villa Bendega Villas offers plenty of private spaces to get away from it all and unwind. The four large bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms and private balconies, are positioned to capture stunning views. A reading bale, a gym and massage room with outdoor bath, a library with 50-inch plasma TV, a games room complete with pool table, and a sun deck hidden below the pool provide ample opportunities for relaxation. For gatherings, the villa has a stunning open sitting area that overlooks the rice fields, a separate air-conditioned dining room with a table that seats up to 20, a pool pavilion with outdoor dining for 10 or more and an 11m x 11m infinity-edge pool, both situated to catch the fabulous Bali sunsets.

The villa’s contemporary design is enhanced with thoughtfully chosen Balinese and Javanese sculptures, cabinets and artifacts – many of them antique – as well as bright floral fabrics and custom-printed traditional ikat textiles that bring the stylish dark-wood furniture to vivid life. State-of-the-art facilities include a Sonos digital music system that can be programmed to match musical moods in several different ‘zones’, a modern kitchen, satellite television and DVD players and air conditioning in all the indoor areas.

The extensive gardens surrounding Villa Bendega Villas are laid out as a series of courtyards separated by the pavilions, three large koi-filled ponds and two large lawns. The gardens are dotted with frangipani, oil palms, jasmine, yuccas, African tulip trees and an abundance of tropical fruit.

A dedicated, discreet team of staff, including an excellent chef, are on hand to look after visitors with wide smiles and willing service, leaving you free to indulge in the special charm and beauty of Bali.

Location
Surrounded by terraced rice fields and only five minutes’ walk from the beach, Villa Bendega Villas (meaning ‘fisherman’ in the local language) borders a small fishing village of the same name in the district of Canggu, southwest Bali. Despite its rural setting the villa is only 20 minutes’ drive from the restaurants and shops of cosmopolitan Seminyak, an hour from Bali’s cultural centre of Ubud, and 30 minutes from the international airport.

Staff
One of the greatest advantages of staying in a villa is the personal service provided by the villa’s dedicated team of professional staff. The team will look after every villa guest – from toddler to grandparent – in true Balinese style by understanding individual expectations and preferences. The Villa Manager and Chef, in particular, will be delighted to discuss your desires or concerns.

TOUR THE VILLA

Orientation
Villa Bendega Villas has been carefully designed to maximize its 3,500m2 of land amidst the rice terraces of Canggu. The villa’s six buildings form a rough ‘H’ shape, with the main living and sleeping accommodation spread across the two-storey horizontal bar of the ‘H’, and one of the three master bedrooms, the pool pavilion, the gym and the staff quarters forming the four ‘prongs’. This pleasing symmetry is carried through to many elements within the villa, including the 11m2 swimming pool which lies between the pool pavilion and a master bedroom pavilion.

Entry
The villa is entered via gates which slide open to reveal a 2m-high black-stone Buddha head serenely welcoming visitors to the property. The entry courtyard provides ample room for parking and is dotted with frangipani, oil palms, jasmine, yuccas and African tulip trees. Guests walk over sandstone steps across a large koi-filled pond to the main entrance doors.

Sitting room
Two sets of tall sliding doors at the entrance to the main building open to reveal a spectacular open-air, double-height sitting room which faces the garden and pool, and overlooks the rice fields beyond. This space, which seats 12, is furnished with two oversized black teak sofas and armchairs set around matching coffee tables. The black upholstery is brought to life with vibrant contrasting green and orange cushions. Along the back wall of the sitting room, an ancient canoe has been topped with glass and transformed into a 6m-long table; a stunning centerpiece for a buffet dinner. Above the canoe, 10 antique carved wooden panels are framed against the golden sandstone walls.

A galleried timber walkway runs above the sitting area and then ducks back to the upstairs of the bedrooms, providing another opportunity to enjoy the views.

Dining room and Kitchen
To the right of the sitting room, glass sliding doors lead into the formal, wooden-floored, dining room, displaying a massive 5m-long solid Marbau dining table which will seat up to 20 people. More sliding glass doors open onto the garden at the front, while a large mirror is set in an antique door frame at the far end of the room. A charming old green glass-fronted cabinet houses glassware and crockery next to a door which leads through to the kitchen.

The kitchen at Villa Bendega Villas reflects the owners’ love of cooking. The fully-fitted, air-conditioned, modern kitchen has dark wood cabinets and cream-colored Corian work tops. The chef’s biggest delight is the range of equipment – including an extra large oven, a Jura Impressa coffee machine, waffle-maker, Cuisinart panini toaster, ice cream maker and dishwasher, to name but a few. The kitchen is also equipped with two large fridges, a freezer and wine fridge in the pantry.

Library
On the other side of the open-air sitting room is the comfortable library and adjoining games room. A set of floor-to-ceiling shelves contain numerous books on Bali and Indonesia as well as more popular holiday reading. The library has a 50-inch flat-screen television with DVD player and more than 50 international satellite channels. An L-shaped sofa and two floral printed chairs offer plenty of comfort in front of the TV.

Games room
The games room is surrounded by glass and can be opened up on three sides to the gardens if desired. A high, round table and bar stools plus two easy chairs provide seating for spectators. While the full-sized pool table is the centre of attention, there is a wide selection of games, for those less adept with the cue.

Across from the library and games room is a delightful guest washroom. Finished in warm Indian Sandstone, and furnished with a very beautiful antique cabinet featuring colorfully painted Indonesian characters, this washroom opens into a small walled garden planted with frangipani trees and decorated with carved stone panels and pedestals.

Pool and Pool Pavilion
Across the lawn, directly opposite the living room, the 11m x 11m stone-tiled infinity-edged swimming pool overlooks the rice fields. As well as being large enough for some serious swimming, the pool is perfectly positioned for sunset cocktails, which can be enjoyed from the wide stone ‘shelves’ set into the pool at just the right depth. To the right of the pool a large open-sided pavilion is home to a huge L-shaped daybed, upholstered in waterproof orange Sunbrella fabric and scattered with bright, sunny cushions; and you can roll straight into the pool from the matching beanbags at the edge of the pool deck.

The round table and chairs at the centre of the pool pavilion will seat up to 10 people for casual outdoor dining. This is a great place to congregate at the start of the day for a ‘come-as-you-please’ breakfast. Behind a sliding louvered door at one side of the pool pavilion is a water cooler, bar fridge and sink. Around the corner a door leads into a guest changing room with toilet and shower.

Garden Bale
To the far side of the lawn, perched over another koi pond that leads to one of the bedrooms, is a peaceful relaxation bale furnished with a comfortable daybed, floor cushions and two petrified-wood stools.

Gym and Massage Room
To the right of the entry courtyard, a stepping-stone pathway leads across the lawn to the gym and massage room, housed in its own private pavilion. This room is divided by a folding carved wood screen, with a massage bed on one side and an exercise bike and treadmill on the other. While they exercise, gym users have the option to watch TV or listen to music, which can be programmed specifically for this room. Although surrounded by glass on three sides, the gym and massage room is fitted with blinds which can be pulled down for privacy and the room can be fan-cooled or air conditioned.

Tucked away behind the gym is an outdoor bathroom with toilet, rain shower and, the piece de resistance, a huge bathtub carved from a single piece of black granite, reached by stepping stones over a tranquil pond. The walled garden surrounding the tub is planted with frangipani and palms and a Flame of the Forest tree – a sublime place to relieve those aching muscles after a good work-out.

Bedrooms
Every bedroom at Villa Bendega Villas has lovely open views across the greener-than-green rice fields of Canggu. The villa can accommodate eight people in three king-bedded rooms and one twin bedroom (which can convert into a fourth king-bedded room). There is capacity to add two more fold-away beds for children if required. All bedrooms are generously sized, tastefully furnished, and have en-suite bathrooms and outdoor balconies.

Master Bedroom – Ground Floor – Purple Room
Accessed by stepping stones across a garden pond, the first master bedroom is housed in its own pavilion at the front of the gardens, directly overlooking the rice fields. This room is private, peaceful and perfectly placed. A canopied, four-poster, king-size bed is the focus of the room, facing a private terrace and the rice fields beyond. Behind the bed is a large, walk-through, mirrored dressing area with enough wardrobe space for even the most extended of stays. The room is furnished with antique console tables, bedside cabinets and an easy chair upholstered in ikat fabric, custom-printed to match the other purple accessories in the room. A door at the side of the bedroom leads out to the pool and gardens.

The en-suite bathroom is vast. At one end, again overlooking the rice fields is a sunken double bathtub. Two wash basins are set in Travertine vanity tops running along the side of the bathroom while, at the far end, a large walk-in shower offers both rain shower and hand shower fittings.

Master Bedroom – Upstairs – The Orange Room
This bedroom is positioned at the far right of the upper floor in the main building directly above the dining room. Accessed by a private walkway, a centrally placed, canopied, four-poster king-size bed looks out onto a private terrace with daybed which, in turn, overlooks the gardens, pool and rice fields. To the right of the bed is an antique yellow and green painted Javanese cupboard, on top of which are two painted wooden cockerels.

Directly behind the bed, the dressing area leads through to another large en-suite bathroom presenting similar fittings to those in all the master bedrooms, but this time the super-size bathtub overlooks the gardens of the villa. Adjoining the bedroom is a study equipped with a laptop computer and printer.

Master Bedroom – Upstairs – The Green Room
At the opposite end of the upper floor another king-bedded master bedroom awaits. The large bathroom also has a separate shower and a large bathtub with views of the ocean. The room is furnished with teak console tables, bedside cabinets and an easy chair upholstered in ikat fabric, custom-printed to match the other green accessories in the room. A canopied king-size four-poster bed looks out over a full ‘wall’ of sliding glass doors that lead out onto a balcony furnished with a colorful daybed which is shared with the twin room next door.

Twin Room – Upstairs – Turquoise Room
Villa Bendega Villas has been designed with families in mind and this twin-bedded room, with its turquoise accessories is ideal for children (the beds can be easily converted to a king size if preferred). This bedroom also features a 37-inch flat screen TV. Fitted wardrobes and shelving, an antique console, an easy chair and bedside tables complete the furnishings. The en-suite bathroom has a spacious walk-in shower and double wash basins.

 VILLA FACILITIES

Audio Visual
A Sonos digital music system, with several thousand play tracks sorted into a wide variety of genres, can be controlled remotely from anywhere within the villa. Different tracks or playlists can be played in the pool pavilion, dining room, sitting room, library and games room or gym. IPods can also be connected to the Sonos system and iPod docks and speakers are provided in all the bedrooms.
The library has a 50-inch, wall mounted flat screen TV and DVD player with more than 50 satellite channels. Two additional flat-screen TVs can be found in the gym and the twin bedroom.

Communications
Phones are situated in all bedrooms and living areas at Villa Bendega Villas. An in-house phone system allows guests to make calls to other areas of the villa, including to the manager’s office or kitchen. All phones can make IDD calls which are charged at cost.

A laptop computer and printer are available to guests in the study and a further printer and facsimile machine can be found in the villa manager’s office.

Wi-Fi internet facilities are available throughout the villa and gardens should guests wish to use their own laptops.

 Other facilities

Wine & Dine
Menus are available at the villa for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but it is recommended that guests meet with the villa manager and chef at the start of their stay to discuss food likes and dislikes (or even food cravings), special dietary needs and meal schedules. An open dialogue will keep both chef and guests happy! Please discuss meals in advance (ideally 24 hours) to allow the chef the time he needs to prepare the provision. Daily breakfast is included in the villa rate.

Once selections are made, guests can relax and enjoy delicious home-cooked food – Asian and Western – prepared where and when they like. The chef loves to delight villa guests with his beautifully presented dishes – from roasted vegetable salads, to Balinese chicken curry, to nasi goreng (friend rice), to steak and chips. His desserts are not to be missed either – or his home-made jams and chutneys.
